The municipality of Celje is one of eleven urban municipalities in the Republic of Slovenia. It is bordered on the north by the municipality of Vojnik, on the east by the municipality of Šentjur, on the southeast by the municipality of Štore, on the south by the municipality of Laško and on the west by the municipality of Žalec. It covers an area of 94 km2 and has 49,377 (Source: Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, 2018). The municipal holiday of the City of Celje is April 11, commemorating the grant of town rights in 1451.
Mayor of Celje has been Bojan Šrot since 1998, serving as mayor for the sixth term.
The town of Celje is the center of the municipality and lies at the confluence of the rivers Savinja and Voglajna in the Lower Savinja Valley. Celje is a dynamic and developmental city. It is the administrative, administrative, cultural, educational, economic, fair and tourist center of the region. The biggest tourist attractions are the Old Castle of Celje and the Rector's Palace (where the Regional Museum of Celje is headquartered), a cultural and historical treasure of the city, which shines in a renewed image and testifies to the rich history of Celje. Celje boasts a rich sports infrastructure, which enables it to organize and host competitions internationally. The most famous sports facilities are the Z'dežele football stadium, the old Golovec handball hall with its bowling alley, the Ice Hall with an ice rink, the Kladivar athletic stadium, the Rock Basement football stadium and the new Zlatorog handball and multipurpose hall. In 2013, the latter hosted European Basketball Championship matches (EuroBasket 2013) and in recent years European Youth Championships. Celje is the third largest city in Slovenia. It measures 22,714 km², the altitude of the city is 238 meters. It has 9 local communities (Aljažev hill, Ljubečna, Medlog, Ostrožno, Pod gradom, Skofja vas, Smartno in Rožna dolina, Teharje, Trnovlje) and 10 city districts (Center, Dečkovo naselje, Dolgo polje, Gaberje, Hudinja, Karel Destovnik Kajuh, Lava, Nova Vas, Savinja, Slavko Šlander).

Major European projects implemented by the Municipality of Celje over the last ten years include the Central Waste Water Treatment Plant, the Regional Waste Management Center, the renovation of the Old Castle of Celje, the reconstruction of the Rector's Palace, the revitalization and construction of the infrastructure on Lake Šmartinski, the renovation of the Old Town Center. The Municipality of Celje also devoted a large part of municipal and European funds to the construction of flood measures in the Savinja basin, its tributaries and smaller watercourses in the wider area. Other important projects implemented by the Municipality of Celje include the construction of the City Market Celje and the Central Library of Celje, the introduction of urban passenger transport and the bicycle rental system KolesCE, the construction of road and cycling infrastructure… With the help of European funds in the financial perspective 2014-2020 energy rehabilitation of schools and kindergartens, as well as the Celje home, where the historic facade is comprehensively restored. The former department store T will have its headquarters located in the science park, Tehno Park, while also operating part of the Savinja Region Incubator.
