ABOUT NIGERIA’S REDD+ READINESS PROGRAMME
Reducing Emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, through forest conservation, sustainable management and enhancement of carbon stocks.The REDD+ mechanism, as agreed under ongoing international negotiations in the climate-change convention, represents a valuable opportunity for Nigeria in their efforts for forest conservation, while simultaneously contributing to climate change mitigation globally and to enhancing community development locally.
Nigeria as a participant Country of the FCPF is currently in its 'readiness phase' which has been ongoing since 2008 with sucess stories of Developing a National REDD+ Strategy, policies, capacity building and a Forest Reference Emission Level after an Intensive National Forest Carbon Inventory.
The REDD+ Programme is not just to curb deforestation and forest degradation, but conserve through tree planting and rehabilitation of degraded lands.
This REDD+ programme idea was most attractive to Countries with high rate of deforestation, because they have the greatest potential to significantly reduce their emissions from forest loss and reap greatest benefits when they do (Cifor 2009) which encourages greater participation in REDD.
FUNDING: Funds come either directly from International financing schemes, or from National government programmes ,but the Nigeria''s REDD+ programme is currently co-ordinated by an initiative of the Worldbank; the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF).
