Efficient plant varieties are some of the most important agricultural and horticultural resources. The excellent advancements in the performance of German agriculture and horticulture have only been possible due to successes in plant breeding. This applies to the increase in yields per hectare, to the improvement in suitability for cultivation and product quality of a number of crop species and to increased resistance against diseases and pests, as well as the expansion of the range of species and varieties of ornamental plants.

The legislation relating to plant breeders’ rights and national listing, and the implementation thereof by the Federal Plant Variety Office, create a reliable framework to support plant breeders in developing new, continually improved varieties and to introduce these varieties into agriculture and horticulture.
