The Spanish capital enjoys increasing international recognition, thanks – among other initiatives – to its alliances with other cities. Agreements with cities and important international institutions have become a powerful promotion tool for Madrid.
The international influence enjoyed by a city, politically, economically and in terms of technology, is fundamental when it comes to placing it among the world’s greatest urban hubs. Active participation in international organisations, networks and events is a highly effective tool to help a city achieve international influence.
Madrid, as the capital of Spain and home to the country’s central institutions, has the same political influence in the west as any other capital of a medium-sized country, as well as enjoying a special connection with Latin America thanks to its cultural and historical links. The Madrid City Council has an active role in numerous global networks and organisations, and is in fact the driving force behind some of them, such as the Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities (UCCI).
