The Ajuntament De Barcelona is one of the five public administrations with political responsibility in the city of Barcelona , next to the General Administration of the State of Spain , the Generalitat de Catalunya , the Barcelonès Regional Council and the Diputació de Barcelona . It has its historical origins in the Consell de Cent .
Since 1979 , its political leaders are elected by universal suffrage for citizens of Barcelona with the right to vote, in elections held every four years. At present, his mayor is Ada Colau i Ballano, who is at the head of a minority government team made up of the Barcelona joint coalition . Colau replaced Xavier Trias in early June 2015 , becoming the first woman to obtain the mayoralty of the city.
