Ministere des Affaires Sociales et de la Sante is a government body that was renamed as the Ministry of Solidarity and Health in 2017. The origin of the Ministry of Health dates back to 1920 as the Ministry of Hygiene, Assistance and Social Welfare.
The French Ministry of Health has specific tasks such as preparing and implementing public policies related to childhood, the elderly and the disabled. It is responsible for the organization of prevention and care and for the development and implementation of poverty reduction programs. The Ministry has authority over the general directorate of health, the general management of the healthcare offer, the general direction of social cohesion together with the Minister of Economy, the direction of social security jointly with the Minister of Finance and the direction of research, studies, evaluation and statistics with the Minister of Finance and Labour. Regional health agencies and directorates for youth, sports and social cohesion are also under the supervision of the Ministry. In addition, social ministries offer a wide range of competitive examinations open to external or internal candidates, as well as professional examinations with specific conditions of entry.
