The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is mandated by the United Nations to lead and coordinate international action to ensure the worldwide protection and resolution of refugees.
In its work, UNHCR acts on the basis of the Charter of the Organization and is guided by the 1951 United Nations Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol. UNHCR's humanitarian work is based primarily on the principles of international refugee law.
