Kamenica, as an equal unit with other municipalities in the country, gained the statute of the Municipality in 1959.
The municipality of Kamenica lies in the east of Kosovo. It borders in the South-West with the municipality of Gjilan, in the West with the municipality of Novo Brdo and in the North-West with Prishtina. In the North with the Municipality of Medvedja and Leskovac, in the East with Vranje and in the East and South-East with Bujanovac.
The geographical position of the Municipality of Kamenica is perimeter at the easternmost tip of Kosovo, but it is a connecting bridge between the highway Gjilan-Bujanovac, connected to other centers of Kosovo. Gjilan is located at a distance of 30 km, while Prishtina 75 km from Kamenica. It can be connected with Prishtina by shorter roads, through Novobërdë and Llabjan, where in both directions the road is shortened by 20-25 km. The nearest railway station is in Ferizaj and Bujanovac. The nearest airport is Pristina 90km and Skopje 130km.
Kamenica is a hilly-mountainous place with several valleys around rivers, with alluvial soil very suitable for vegetables, and other agricultural crops. These lie in the Krivareka River Basin, the Desivojca River and the Hogosht River to the north, while the southern part lies around the Anamorava River.
The municipality of Kamenica has been mainly known for the industry of construction material, ceramic tiles and sintermagnesite. However, there are also favorable conditions for the development of agriculture, livestock, beekeeping, orchards, handicrafts, trade, etc.
