While not the only service provider in the country, the National Water Commission (NWC) is the primary agency responsible for all key water and sewerage activities such as water production, collection, treatment and the discharge of urban sewage in Jamaica. The NWC and the Parish Councils share responsibility for rural water.
The NWC provides 190 million gallons of drinkable water per day to its over 400,000 registered accounts which represent about 2 million people in Jamaica. NWC was officially founded in 1980 by the merger of the Kingston and St. Andrew Water Commission and the rurally centered National Water Authority.
