According to the Emiri Decree 16/2014 on assigning functions and duties of the Ministries in the country, the Ministry of the Interior has the following general duties and functions:
1. Propose policies, plans and programs relating to the functions of the ministry and its implementation after adoption.
2. Overseeing the its affiliates, as determined by the legislative instruments organizing these authorities.
3. Implementing the laws, regulations and decrees relating to the functions of the ministry.
4. Overall supervision of the public and private entities that engage in activities related to the functions of the ministry, and issuance of the necessary licenses, according to the law.
5. Quality control in performance of activities related to the functions of the ministry.
6. Developing relations between the country and other countries and international organizations in the field of functions of the ministry, and reaching into contracts and agreements, in coordination with the competent authorities.
7. Collect, study and analysis of information and data concerning the activity of the ministry, and demonstrate the benefit from them in the planning and implementation of programs and policies relating to its functions.
8. Preparation of draft legislative instruments relating to the functions of the ministry.
9. Representing the Country at Arab, regional and international conferences, bodies, organizations in the field of Ministry’s functions.
10. Preparing statistics on related to the functions of the Ministry and publishing it in coordination with the competent authorities.
11. Preparing annual budget of the Ministry and its final account.
As per the clause (3) of the same Decree, the special functions of the Ministry are as follows
The Ministry of Interior is concerned to maintain security and public order and public morals, to protect lives, honor and properties to ensure the safety and security of the homeland, citizens and all those who reside in the State or enter its territory, to take all necessary means to prevent crimes and to control them, to organize issues of nationality and entry and residence of expatriates, and to secure and protect important public buildings and facilities in the state.
