Description

The Ministry of Livestock was founded as a body in 1902. It changed its name to the Veterinary Authority in November 1911 and was successfully operated by several directors from various military positions until 1955.

Before declaring independence on June 30, 1955, it was Sudanized as the Animal Production Authority, with Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Khalil serving as its first Sudanese director.

Following Sudan's declaration of independence, it was known as the Ministry of Livestock until 1971 and the Ministry of Animal Production until 1972.

After incorporating the Ministry of Agriculture, it later changed its name to the Ministry of Natural Resources. In 1989 AD, it returned to being the Ministry of Agriculture, and since 1996, its current official name has been the Ministry of Livestock.

Its responsibilities include:

  • Preserving the national herd's health to increase food security, exports of animals, and fish.
  • Reconstructing and growing slaughterhouses and quarries to meet international standards.
  • Improving and developing veterinary services in the country.
  • Keeping up with the demands of international markets and boosting competitiveness and production procedures.
  • Introducing cutting-edge technologies that would improve overall performance.
  • Encouraging investment in fisheries and livestock.
  • Contributing to initiatives aimed at reducing poverty and raising household income.
  • Supplying medication, vaccines, and veterinary treatments while also monitoring their usage.
  • Sudan, a nation with abundant natural and agricultural resources, places a high value on its fishery and animal resource industries. Many Sudanese inhabitants rely on these industries for their livelihoods and food security, which is crucial to the nation's economy.

Furthermore, the Ministry is responsible for controlling and managing the fisheries industry in Sudan, which is crucial for the conservation and sustainability of fish stocks. It may implement policies to regulate fishing operations, safeguard fish stocks, and advance aquaculture.
