The Government of Tamil Nadu attaches great importance to providing quality education to its future citizens. Education is the gateway to a brighter future for today's children. Also, the early years of schooling lay the foundation for students' future well-being. The primary objective of the state is to provide quality and accessible inclusive education to all children. It is on this basis that the Government of Tamil Nadu has allocated Rs.32,599.54 crore for the school education department in the financial statement for the year 2021-2022.
In terms of school education, enrolling all children of government school age in school, ensuring that enrolled children continue their schooling up to secondary education without dropout, improving children's age-appropriate learning outcomes, providing effective training to teachers and strengthening their teaching skills, using learning and teaching technologies, providing basic education to all students. Teaching literacy and numeracy skills, improving basic facilities in schools,Imparting new age skills to children and ensuring the safety and welfare of children in extraordinary circumstances like Covid are important government concerns regarding school education.
Various Directorates under the Department of School Education are carrying out the responsibilities of fulfilling the various objectives mentioned above of the Government. Directorate of Elementary Education, Directorate of School Education, Directorate of Matriculation School Education, Integrated School Education, Directorate of Non-Formal and Adult Education are the Directorates under the Department of School Education. Also, the department is functioning with the help of State Institute of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Directorate of State Examinations, Directorate of Public Libraries, Teacher Selection Board and Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation.
