The Kingdom of the Netherlands , which has existed since 1813, is a sovereign state within which four countries have been distinguished since 2010: the Netherlands , Aruba , Curaçao and Sint Maarten . These countries are equal parts of the kingdom, but with different political positions: the Caribbean countries are autonomous by the Charter for the Kingdom of the Netherlands , which has been the guiding document for the kingdom since 1954, but they also co-decide on kingdom affairs designated by the Charter , insofar as those matters touch on these three areas.
The kingdom is governed by the institutions mentioned in the Statute and regulated in the Constitution for the Kingdom of the Netherlands .
