The district of Bamberg is the westernmost district of the administrative district of Upper Franconia in Bavaria. In the west and south it borders on the districts of Lower and Middle Franconia . The independent city of Bamberg is completely surrounded by the district. It also includes two exclaves of the municipality of Pommersfelden in the south, which are close together. In the larger one there are the Limbacher Weiher and the Steinersee. The area is completely surrounded by the district of Erlangen-Höchstadt and is about one kilometer away from the rest of the district, but administratively it belongs to the district of Bamberg. The district is a member of the Nuremberg metropolitan region and the Oberfranken-West planning region.
