Corbeil -Essonnes is a French commune located twenty - nine kilometers southeast of Paris, in the Essonne department in the Île - de- France, resulting from the merger in 1951 of the municipalities of Corbeil and Essonnes. Corbeil, a Gallo-Roman city, a castle for the defense of the Seine in the Middle Ages, then a royal city from 1120, and Essonnes, which saw the establishment of hunters in the Palaeolithic, of Gallic potters and which became from the 12th century an important industrial city on the road to Paris, were very early linked in their economic and demographic development, benefiting from the presence of the Seine and the Essonne, waterways sources of energy for the many mills, and the agricultural regions of Beauce and de Brie at the gates of the capital.
The Great Mills of Corbeil, royal mills since the 12th century to the important Altis Semiconductor factory which employs two thousand people, Corbeil-Essonnes, resulting from the merger of the two towns in 1951, is the second town in the department, rich in history and of an illustrious heritage, of a population that is still traditionally working class. It is now faced with the challenges of urban renewal, persistent insecurity in certain difficult neighborhoods and the economic difficulties of private and public organisations. Its inhabitants are called Corbeil -Essonnois.
