The Acted Foundation began its work in Morocco in September 2023, following the earthquake of September 9. It works through local partners, mainly the Reach Out Foundation and the Banque Alimentaire du Maroc. Acted, through its partners, is working in the provinces of El Haouz, Taroudant and Chichaoua to meet needs for shelter, water, hygiene and sanitation, and energy.
On September 8, 2023, Morocco was hit by a magnitude 6.8 earthquake at 22:11 GMT 77 kilometers southwest of Marrakech, the most powerful to hit the region in over a century. By Friday September 15, according to the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior, 2,946 people had been killed and 6,125 injured. Numerous buildings, including essential infrastructure for access to water, education and healthcare, were damaged.
