The municipality of Hornstorf borders the Hanseatic city of Wismar in the west. This location has influenced the development in the villages of Hornstorf, Rohlstorf, Kritzow and Rüggow throughout history.
The 718-year-old Hornstorf was connected to the Wismar-Rostock and Karow railway network in 1883. The train station quickly became an important transshipment point for agricultural goods in the region. The von der Lühe family alone cultivated 1,377 hectares on their estate. At the turn of the century, vegetable production to supply the Hanseatic city was greatly developed. When the estate was settled in the 1930s, the farms that are still typical today were created at Schwedenschanze. Today the community is one of the three important settlement centers in the administrative area. Numerous companies have settled on a 34 hectare commercial area in Kritzow/Rüggow since 1992. The companies and farms located in the villages also experienced significant developments.
Attractive housing construction locations with good infrastructure have led to the number of residents increasing from 747 to 1,276 today due to new settlements since 1990.
A beautiful view of the entire Wismar Bay from many points in the community quickly lets the day's troubles fade into the background and invites you to relax and linger.
