The Office of Food for Peace (FFP) within the U.S. Agency for International Development is the world's largest food assistance program.
During its 60 years of activity, FFP has offered support to people from more than 150 countries around the globe and every year offers food supplies worth US$2 billion to the poorest nations worldwide.
FFP’s financial resources come from the US Congress. USAID and the U.S. Department of State submit an annual budget to Congress which analyzes the proposed budget and determines the level of funding to be given. FFP will use the budget granted to order the necessary amount of agricultural commodities from the eligible list of local producers. Tenders will then be requested to determine the most qualified candidates to ship the cargos overseas.
USAID’s FFP works with its partners worldwide to build a world free of hunger and malnutrition ensuring that people everywhere can have a productive life. FFP mobilizes its resources to reduce hunger overseas with food assistance in order to build a more stable and inclusive world.
Apart from food supplies, FFP implements development activities in vulnerable communities that are facing chronic poverty and recurrent crises to reduce food insecurity and to equip people with the required knowledge to feed themselves thus reducing the need for future intervention.
FFP also implements emergency activities in those regions affected by conflict and natural disasters. These activities support the early recovery of people and ensure their nutrition. FFP focuses on chronically vulnerable populations by placing emphasis on women and children under two years of age.
