Geothermal Development Company (GDC) is a Kenyan federally and operated parastatal organization that undertakes surface geothermal development which includes mining, drilling, harnessing, and selling steam to power plants and the national grid for renewable energy.
GDC is tasked with developing steam fields and selling geothermal steam for electricity generation to the Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC and private investors. Its mission is to develop 1,065MW of geothermal resources by 2030 with the vision of lowering the cost of power in Kenya while operating with integrity and professionalism.
The company also has international partner organizations including the French Development Agency, the African Development Bank, the United Nations Environment Programme, the European Investment Bank as well as the Nordic Development Fund. Geothermal exploration and drilling have been funded by the Kenyan government and a number of development partners.
Some of the improvements the GDC has made are through supporting private sector entry and selling steam to power producers, developing human capacity for geothermal development, supporting the Government of Kenya in fund mobilization and removing upfront risks, and reducing costs through infrastructural development exploration works and production drilling.
