I have recently retired from the British Prison Service where having had a grounding as prison officer, worked my way through the ranks to become a senior manager in a number of custodial and headquarters enviroments. I initiated and managed a great deal of change whilst working in prison and headquarters, improving regimes and conditions for prisoners in my care and staff working for me. The last six years of my career were spent on secondment to the UK Immigration Service, Detention Servies. I was initially tasked with improving security and putting in security standards, later I took over management of the dentention estate comprising of ten Immigration Detention Centres, with the brief to re-organise the system to ensure that they met the needs of the business, and as importantly, those is our care. This task was carried out on target despite political pressures, improving the service to the business and those in our care whilst saving a considerable amount of money. I received many visits from Immigration officials from around the world who were looking for examples of good practice. I live with my partner in Thailand where I have been doing some consultancy work as well as visiting ex-pats in Thai prisons to offer support and friendship on a voluntary basis.
