I am a UK national and a former United Kingdom Professional Soldier, Police Officer, Criminal Investigator and Police Trainer and currently a self-employed Police Training and Investigations Consultant working exclusively outside the UK. Since leaving front-line policing in 2000 I have worked variously as a Training, Management, Policing, Investigations and Community Policing Consultant on projects funded by a variety of UN Agencies, the EU, OSCE, DfID, ICMPD, IOM and Caritas amongst others in a total of 36 missions in 26 countries worldwide. Being no stranger to living and working in conflict zones and transitional areas I have successfully advised police and other security services, and have both developed and delivered training courses in a wide and diverse range of subjects. I have also trained a similarly wide and diverse range of participants in Western, Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Central Asia, North, Eastern and Central Africa, the Middle East, the Caribbean and the Caucuses.
I have achieved:
- Over 40 years’ experience in management and leadership in various forms and at various levels.
- Over 38 years operational policing, police management, programme management, and criminal investigations.
- Over 27 years’ experience in police training, the conduct of needs and gap analysis and the associated design, development, management and implementation of resulting capacity building and training programmes for human rights, police reform and police and investigations training, in addition to training all aspects of Crime Scene Management and Exhibits Handling, for clients in over 18 countries worldwide.
- Over 20 years’ experience in transitional and conflict areas policing, investigations, capacity building and police advisory roles, in the training of trainers, in the practical delivery of training programmes and advice to international audiences, using modern adult centred interactive methodologies, through interpreters when required.
- Extensive experience worldwide in the investigation of human rights and gender issues, sexual abuse and serious sexual offences as war crimes and crimes against humanity, and the investigation of other serious crimes in conflict areas. Extensive experience in the training of criminal, human trafficking and Rome Statute Crimes investigators into both domestic and trans-national organised crime.
- Practical experience in the setting up of Community Policing projects in transitional and former conflict areas.
- Expert PEACE Victim, Witness and Suspect Interview Trainer, with almost 30 years’ experience at delivering this training.
- Wide ranging experience in the training of information gathering and intelligence dissemination, and the development of associated training programmes.
- Extensive experience in the design and delivery of Gender Based Violence programmes relating to domestic abuse and support to victims.
- Strong skills in the management of international training programmes and over 20 years’ experience in the practical delivery of training programmes and advice through interpreters to international audiences, using modern adult centred interactive methodologies.
- Extensive experience in monitoring and evaluation situations and writing comprehensive and wide ranging reports.
- Worked on donor funded projects, including various UN agencies, IOM, OSCE, DfID, EC, EU/CARDS, ICMPD and Caritas/ICMC
- UK Government Hostile Environment Awareness Training qualified and trained as a First Responder.
- Founder Member of the UK Government Prevention of Sexual Violence Initiative (PSVI).
