About
Dr Kevin Obiero is a Research Scientist and Centre Director at Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute in-charge of coordinating research, administrative and financial functions to ensure research activities are aligned to the Institute’s strategic plan, vision and mandate. Previously, he worked as an Aquaculture Knowledge Transfer Partnership (AKTP) Associate involved in the implementation of a fisheries and aquaculture partnership project facilitated by the British Council and funded by DFID. He has been engaged by Development Alternatives International (DAI) as a Senior Fisheries Consultant on a DFID funded M4P programme known as Promoting Inclusive Markets in Somalia. He was a lead consultant engaged by USAID Growth, Enterprise, Employment and Livelihoods (GEEL) project to conduct a feasibility study for improved management of sea cucumber fisheries and mangrove habitats of Jubaland. He also conducted a Fish Market and Cost Analysis Project in Kenya for FoodTechAfrica funded by Larive International based in the Netherlands.
During his academic and research experience spanning over 15 years, he has collaborated in the development of donor-funded research projects at national, regional and international levels. He has authored over 30 scientific publications i.e., 20 peer-reviewed journal articles, 12 books/book chapters, > 20 conference proceedings, technical and consultancy reports.
Dr Obiero has won several awards and grants to attend international conferences, seminars, short courses and training programmes. He has gained extensive project management experience by completing a Post-Graduate Diploma in Project Management. He also attended advanced training for governance and policy-oriented studies organized by Partnership for African Social and Governance Research (PASGR).
He is the Chair of the Board of Directors for the African Center for Aquatic Research and Education (ACARE) https://www.agl-acare.org/. He holds membership in six professional and academic bodies and is member of Aquaculture Regional Working Group (ARWG) for the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO) and a member of Training Selection Committee (TSC) for the Kenya Climate-Smart Agriculture Project (KCSAP).
