About
Joseph Kobla Wemakor is a seasoned Ghanaian freelance journalist, a prolific writer of no mean repute, an ardent blogger and an online news editor.
An astute journo with proficiency in the field of journalism and with decades of experience in practice, Mr. Wemakor has been recognized on several platforms including being adjudged the winner of the 2018 media competition on migration reporting as well as the recipient of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) 60th Anniversary Media Contest Award 2019. Joseph's journalism career began after successful completion of the Ghana Institute of Journalism(GIJ), Knutsford University College and having interned with two leading media conglomerates in Ghana; the Multimedia Group Limited (Joy News Channel) and Media General’s TV Network Limited as well as the Information Service Department (ISD) including other leading media houses in Ghana and beyond.
Aside being an astute journo, Mr Wemakor also doubles as a Sustainable Development Goals advocate, a youth leader, a trained climate change proponent and a human rights activist. In line with his passion as a human rights activist, he founded the Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG), a Non-governmental (NGO) committed to promoting and defending human rights abuses against all manner of people with focus attention on women, girls, children, persons living with disability and the marginalized in the society. This organization he also currently leads as the Executive Director is making waves in Ghana imparting knowledge on human rights to the populace. He also doubles as the Deputy Head of Media and Communications of the Ghana Chapter of the PLO Lumumba Foundation and Public Relations Officer of the Greater Accra Regional Youth Network. Mr. Wemakor through his dedication towards humanity has worked and volunteered for some civil society organizations, the United Nations including other International Organizations in Ghana and abroad. These include the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Accra, UNDP Ghana, US Peace Corps and Engage Now Africa (ENA). He is a member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) Network of Journalists, Media Migration Network (MMN), Coalition of People Against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (COPASH) and the UNFPA Media (MCAN). Joseph is also an accredited member of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), Amnesty International Ghana Chapter, Global Network of Civil Society Organizations and the CSOs Platform on SDGs among others. Mr Wemakor has represented Ghana on several platforms both locally and internationally in a bid to chart a common front for the youth and humanity. In October 2019, he was part of 19 journalists who were selected from all over Africa by the Climate and Development Knowledge Network and the IPCC to receive skills training and knowledge about climate change in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia including attending a youth leadership training forum held in the United States of America. He is currently a student pursing a higher education in Public Relations at the Ghana Institute of Journalism and a fellow of the Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa Financial Journalism Program (BMIA).
