Agronomist: Tasked with helping the islands producers increase production, and reduce reliance on imported produce. A diverse and encompassing agronomic role; from purchasing decisions to marketing and everything in-between. Setting up and carrying out a series of training courses and producing a range of guidelines for crop production. Advising growers working in hydroponics, covered production, and field grown vegetables. Both conventional and pesticide free systems. Working with suppliers to procure best value inputs (imports are expensive). In a short period I was able to source fertiliser at 100% lower cost to the farmers than was available. Working with retailers and farmer groups to program cropping and match supply with demand, Planning and executing field trials and demonstration plots. Implementing technology solutions: using drones in St Helena Agriculture for the first time, training stakeholders in interpretation and use of simple overhead RGB images, using farm management software for small scale farming and making use of simple GIS systems on mobile phones.
