About
Paolo Romano has been working for the UN system for over 20 years, collaborating with numerous UN agencies, both in the field and at HQs level. During his career Paolo has been undertaking growing responsibilities in the field of data collection, processing, management and analysis, including but not limited to the use of GIS and presentation of results in the form of mapping products and info-graphics. In addition, he has extensively worked in building appropriate capacity through the training of national and international staff and managing, organizing, and conducting these activities.
Paolo’s data management experience starts with the UN HQs with activities related to computer applications (GIS and mathematical modelling) to water resources and soil conservation. Subsequently, he undertook responsibilities in data management and GIS applied to humanitarian emergencies, with numerous overseas missions mainly with WFP, FAO and OCHA.
From 2004 up to 2009, Paolo has been extensively involved in the implementation of the OCHA Information Management Strategy, working as Data Coordinator for Humanitarian Information Centres and establishing Information Management Units (IMUs) in various countries (from 2008 to 2009 he has been Head of the Information Management Unit at the OCHA Regional Office for Southern Africa). During these missions he developed a significant experience in the establishment of operation units. As information manager, the activities focused on improving the capacity of stakeholders in analysis and decision-making through strengthened collection, processing, interpretation and dissemination of information, as well as anticipating information needs and suggest appropriate tools or products to meet the needs of emergency responders.
From 2010 up to date, Paolo worked for FAO, with the global Food Security Cluster and as Information Manager for various country Food Security Clusters and for UN OCHA.
