About
I have a strong academic background and project-management experience in renewable energy (RE) systems and energy efficieny (EE) technologies. First of all, I have a dynamic and sustainable international practices on my expertises, owing to that I received my Ph.D degree from Lehigh University (Bethlehem City, USA) and I pursued a postdoctoral research at MIT (Boston, USA). My previous international academic practices mentioned here were extremely useful to develop scientific tool on analyzing thermo-energy systems.
I worked in the Southeast Anatolia Region (SEAR) for more than eighteen years. During those years, I have managed many academic and industrial projects on renewable (especially on solar) energy technologies and developed quite many solar based technologies that can potentially be used for green growth of SEAR. Some of the examples are solar irrigation, solar refrigeration, solar drying, solar lighting, solar car, solar and wind hybrid system for power generation. I have thus gained significant knowledge and experience in a wide range of renewable energy systems for rural electrification. These concrete practices have made me highly confident on identifying renewable energy potential and needs of the Southeast Anatolia Region (SEAR). Besides; I am very familiar with the international best practices in deployment of energy efficiency techniques and technologies and thus confident on identifying the applicability and suitability of such best practices to the SEAR; especially for energy efficient solutions in buildings and industrial processes.
I closely collaborated with GAP-RDA and UNDP-Turkey in recent years for some of RE&EE related activities; including preperation of pre-strategy report titled ‘Photovoltaic Technology for the GAP region of Turkey’ with the University of California, Berkeley. I then worked GAP-REEE Project between September 2009 - June 2016 and actively involved in preparation of all key-report outputs (i.e. inception, strategy blue-print, action plan reports) and in peer-review of the feasibility reports produced for the seven pilot projects, selected as potential green growth drivers of the region. One of my main tasks was to support GAP RDA and UNDP for identification of new initiatives in the areas of RE & EE and support active involvement of local academia and universities into the projects. A greatly succesfull project proposal of the GAP-REEE R&D Center was generated in the first phase under this task; by involvement of regional, national and international universities as well as regional/national companies and public institutions.
I worked then with research teams for projects dealing with transition to carbon-neutral economy. As co-principal investigators of two recent projects in this area, I developed a scheme to contribute to the realization of a development model that is based on utilization of a low-carbon technologies in all subsectors of the economic system for increasing the competitiveness of the GAP Region of Turkey. I also prepared an effective and sustainable action plan to provide the most effective use of the resources in all production and service areas in the GAP Region, to improve the efficiency, to reduce the carbon emissions, and to ensure a sustainable and green growth. One of the most effective tools I developed in this project is the Carbon Emission Expert System and Simulation (KAUSS) algorithm, enabling cities to optimize their activities to reduce existing carbon emission emissions, taking into account the city / region statistical / climatic data of technologies. This algoritm takes into account all the elements of the local potential and value-added chain of technology to be implemented and considers using local dynamics as much as possible in terms of production, operation and maintenance.
I very recently worked with the GIZ between 2019-2022 as a component coordinator of the project titled ‘Technical Assistance for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Support for the Municipalities and Universities’. My main task was to develop efficient R&D tools for Turkish Universities to increase their collaboration with EU Universities and R&D Institutions.
I am founder and founding director of the GAP Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency R&D Center at Harran University, Sanliurfa/Turkey. I am also one of the associate editors of the Solar Energy Journal, published by Elsevier.
