About
Mr. Jamal is a graduate of the University of British Columbia in Canada, obtaining a degree in Commerce & Business Administration, with majors in Marketing (International Trade), minors in Urban Land Economics, and extensive course work in Political Science (International Relations). With a career in both the public and private sectors, Mr. Jamal was recently conferred as a Knight Commander of the Order of Civil Merit by His Majesty King Juan Carlos of Spain – with the title “Ilustrisimo Senor” - in recognition for his work using "Diplomacy for Development".

Over the last 30 years, as a social-entrepreneur, Mr. Jamal has worked extensively in building public-private partnerships in the areas of socio-economic, trade and business development. He has been involved in investment promotion policy issues, infrastructure development and many innovative projects with multi-source donors, government agencies and commercial financing. He has also served on a number of Corporate and NGO Boards, and I-NGO Advisory Councils.

Prior to being appointed the Chief Executive Officer of the Aga Khan Foundation (Pakistan), an affiliate of the Aga Khan Development Network (see: www.AKDN.org), Mr. Jamal was the Principal of Alliances International Inc., and the Chairman of Aguila American Resources Ltd. - with mineral exploration projects in South America & Africa.

For 13 years Mr. Jamal served as the founding President & C.E.O. of the Dogrib Nation Group of Companies – a rural regional economic development agency. He played an integral role in initiating the land claims & self-government negotiations – paving the way for resource development in the Northwest Territories of Canada. He focused on community empowerment through devolution, training & capacity building, and governance issues. He promoted the creation of an enabling environment in the Region, and formed joint ventures with leading Canadian & Multinational Corporations, emphasizing integrated, sustainable, and people-centered development. During Mr. Jamal’s tenure, the Group made strategic investments in the fields of financial services (providing venture capital, small business loans, and business advisory programs for SMEs), and power generation. The Dogrib Power Corporation is the only independent hydropower producer in the Northwest Territories, and the first ever rural electrification entity in Canada that is 100% aboriginal/community owned. The Group also formed a major resource development conglomerate, with business interests in oil & gas drilling; forestry; travel management & aviation (helicopter & fixed wing); civil construction; industrial camp & catering services; engineering, procurement & environmental management; and in various up and down stream aspects of Canada’s new diamond industry.

Mr. Jamal was also actively involved with the United Nations Association in Canada (UNAC). He served in various Board capacities, including Regional Vice-President and Chairman of UNAC’s Environment, Development, and Corporate Outreach Committees. Mr. Jamal also served for seven years on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Council for International Co-operation (CCIC). He was a member of CCIC’s Executive Committee and participated, inter-alia, in the annual Canadian Foreign Policy Reviews. Mr. Jamal also had liaison responsibilities for development assistance activities of Council Members in Africa/Middle East and Asia/Pacific regions. He also Chaired CCIC’s Reconstruction & Rehabilitation Committee, administering CIDA funded aid programs for post-conflict areas. Mr. Jamal has represented various Canadian and other interests in a number of international forums. He has a range of national and international experience, with a wide Diplomatic, Government, Business, UN, Multilateral Institutional and Donor Agency network.
