REDAA is an action research program to reverse environmental degradation in Africa and Asia that aims to catalyze locally-led research, innovation and action to help people and nature thrive together. REDAA has launched a call to receive project proposals to positively address nature and climate action, gender equality and social inclusion by focusing on one or more of the following thematic priorities in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia and in Southeast Asia:
1. Local research and research capacity
Generation of locally driven evidence, including local and traditional knowledge, and development of local research capacity, local research networks
2. Resource and land use assessments
Multi-objective integrated participatory assessments of natural resources and land use
3. Business Models
Development by non-profit and community organizations, and co-development with corporate partners, of productive business models based on ecosystem goods and services that are sustainable, equitable and resilient to climate change.
4. Funding mechanisms
Establishment of funding mechanisms and funding streams for locally led initiatives
5. Inclusive systems of governance
Improvements by locally led initiatives in the security of tenure rights and resources of indigenous peoples and local communities
The selected proposals will be supported with the resources made available by the British government (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office – FCDO). These are medium-sized grants of between 230,000 and 560,000 euros for initiatives from research to action lasting from two to four years. Following this first call, up to 21 projects are expected to be funded through a two-stage proposal process: Concept Notes and Full Proposals.
In addition to reading the Guidance for Candidates document, applicants should refer to the REDAA Strategy for information on the rationale, objectives, approach, main actions and development of the programme. Applicants must demonstrate how their initiatives positively address integrated nature and climate action, gender equality and social inclusion.
Concept Notes must nominate a lead organisation. This will be the organization that will enter into an agreement with the REDAA program and receive the grant, if the proposal is successful, and will be ultimately responsible for the delivery and management of the project, including the management of any partners.
Lead organizations based in one of the three focus regions (Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia or Southeast Asia) will be prioritized for funding. A minority of projects with lead organizations based outside the target region or country may be considered for funding if proposals demonstrate strong partnerships with locally led organisations.
Lead organizations must be non-profit, can be non-governmental organizations, research institutes or community organizations legally registered in the countries where they operate.
They must demonstrate experience in the type of work being proposed to undertake and staff with the appropriate technical skills and abilities and financial capabilities to successfully manage and implement projects and provide technical and financial reports.
At the Concept Note stage, the last three audited balance sheets of the parent organization are requested, the anticipated annual expenditure for the proposed project must not exceed 25% of this average annual turnover/income.
The lead organization may collaborate with one or more other organisations, including forming a consortium, where applicable. In projects where partner organizations are involved, the project should be co-designed with the partners. Government agencies and intergovernmental and United Nations agencies can be partners and are encouraged to participate, but will not be eligible to receive funding from the REDAA program.
The deadline for the presentation of concept notes is July 31, 2023.
