About the Funding Agency

AICS - the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation - is one of key innovations established by the Italian law on international cooperation (Law No. 125/2014). The Agency began operating in January 2016, with the aim of aligning Italy with its principal European and global partners in the endeavor of development. Its basic model reflects that used in the main European countries, and it must comply with the demand for more professional and innovative forms of cooperation, involving the methodological flexibility necessary in a continuously evolving scenario.

The Agency headquarters are in Rome. AICS runs another base in Florence and 20 field offices worldwide for assessing local needs, implementing development initiatives, monitoring results and building partnerships on the ground. According to the law, the Agency’s mission is to "perform technical and operational activities associated with the examination, development, financing, management and control of the cooperation initiatives".

Locations

Bangladesh

Bangladesh has undertaken extensive infrastructure expansion - including bridges, metro systems, ports and power plants - to sustain rapid industrial and export-led growth. Improved logistics and electricity access have strengthened manufacturing competitiveness, particularly in garments. Large-scale public investment and external financing have underpinned this transformation. Strengthening financial governance, climate resilience and urban infrastructure management will be critical for continued progress.

Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso continues to address infrastructure gaps amid ongoing development challenges by mobilizing external financing and multilateral support for transport, digital and basic services. Recent World Bank‑supported projects are strengthening climate‑resilient road and rail networks to improve connectivity and trade, and expanding digital infrastructure and public services to drive growth and inclusion. Urban mobility and basic infrastructure investments in secondary cities are helping improve access to services and economic opportunities for populations affected by instability and climate shocks. While security and fiscal constraints complicate implementation, infrastructure development remains a core component of the country’s medium‑term growth and resilience strategies.
