Career Opportunity – Executive Director

The Coastal Invasive Species Committee (Coastal ISC) is a registered non-profit society serving the geographic areas of Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and the Sunshine Coast. The Coastal ISC is an operational society, focused on the specialized treatment of regional invasive and noxious species, as well as on educating land managers and the public about the impacts of invasives and their management. Coastal promotes cross jurisdictional coordination and integrated pest management and is an expert in this specific environmental work, helping land managers with their invasive management objectives. The Committee is affiliated with the Invasive Species Council of BC and participates in Regional Invasive Species Organization member meetings, building relationships and collaborative provincial strategies. The Role

The Executive Director works closely with and receives direction from the Coastal ISC President and Board Directors to deliver programs for its members and supervises program coordinator and summer student field staff.

Key Responsibilities

The Executive Director is responsible for the administration of the Society, managing seasonal employees, coordinating chemical and manual field applications, coordinating regional invasive plant treatment contracts and working with affiliate organizations. The successful candidate will also be developing and carrying out invasive plant education and outreach programs (e.g., Knot on My Property, Seedy Saturday educational booths, etc.). Coastal ISC is interested in candidates that are willing to obtain an Industrial Vegetation & Noxious Weed Pesticide Applicator Certificate. The Executive Director role is highly dynamic. Practical experience is required to manage the multifaceted operational arm and Committee.

Preferred Skills:

Degree in applied/natural science, agriculture or related field
5 or more years experience, preferably in a non-profit management.
Experience working with Board of Directors
High level strategic thinking and planning
Effective communication skills to promote the society’s mission to public and partners
Success in writing and administering grant applications
Demonstrated ability to establish partnerships with other organizations and individuals.
Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation.
Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making and reporting.
Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff.
A strong understanding for recognizing and respecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples and upholding Coastal ISC’s commitment to achieving positive outcomes in Indigenous relationships
Confidence in clearly articulating information to media outlets such as local papers, radio, and TV
A valid B.C. driver’s license and use of a personal vehicle
Working knowledge of invasive plant management and the principles of integrated pest management
Knowledge of regional and provincial level regulation: IPM Act, BC Weed Control Act, Forest and Range Practices Act, Riparian Area Protection Regulation, Water Sustainability Act, Community Charter, Local Government Act, Controlled Alien Species Regulation and Fisheries Act

Location

Need to be able to work from home and should be based in South or Central Vancouver Island.

Salary

Salary will commensurate with experience and based on a range of 60,000 to $70,000 based on a 37.5 hour work week. There is an option to consider this role as part time (25-30 hours/week) with salary adjusted accordingly.
