Region and duty station:
Duty station will be Addis Ababa, however regular travel to Bale Mountain National Park (BMNP), located in South-eastern Ethiopia, and Semien Mountain National Park (SNMP), located in the North-western part of Ethiopia, will be necessary.

Short project description:
The Project concerns the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in priority protected areas in Ethiopia. The purpose of the Project is to effectively manage protected areas in collaboration and partnership with local communities and other stakeholders. This is to sustainably conserve the biodiversity and landscapes and to contribute to the economic development of the areas and to an improved livelihood of the local population.

The Project concerns the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in priority protected areas in Ethiopia, namely Bale Mountain National Park (BMNP) and the Semien Mountain National Park (SNMP), with the potential extension of support to other areas.

The project aims at the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and landscapes in priority protected areas and the improvement of the livelihood of the local population. For this purpose the following outputs are foreseen:

  • Improved infrastructure and equipment in the selected protected areas
  • Strengthened protected area management in the selected protected areas
  • Participation of local communities

Education:

  • Postgraduate university degree in Civil Engineering or Architecture.
  • Additional training in project management and procurement would be a plus.

Country /Regional experience:
Work experience in Africa preferably in east African countries with socio-economic conditions similar to Ethiopia. A track record for work in Ethiopia would be an asset.

Languages:
Proficiency in the English language (oral and written English)

Expertise / Profile:

  • Professional experience in project management and administration: Strong experience in management and financial administration of intergovernmental development projects, including preparation of project budgets, oversight of financial administration (incl. book-keeping, managing a disposition fund), M&E, human resource management, staff supervision, reporting according to specific donor requirements;
  • Professional experience in procurement: Experience in managing large national and international tender procedures according to national and international standards (preparation of tender documents, evaluation procedures, contracting support, etc.);
  • Donor experience: Professional experience with managing donor-funded projects preferably Financial Cooperation projects in long-term assignments; specific knowledge of German Financial Cooperation (management procedures, reporting, procurement, etc.) would be a strong asset;
  • Professional technical experience in protected area management: Good understanding and proven track record in fields such as infrastructure development for national parks or other conservation areas, supervision of construction work, buffer zone development, managing E&S safeguard standards, rural development and community development. Several years of practical professional experience in management positions in the sector;
  • Leadership experience: Work experience as team leader (m/f/d) or project coordinator (m/f/d) in long-term assignments preferably in larger intergovernmental donor-funded development projects. The candidate (m/f/d) should have at least one such previous assignment over a period of at least 18 months.
