Sheladia Associates is seeking a professional International Health and Safety Expert to join our team for the Karachi Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line Project in Pakistan.

Individual will support the client in delivering a sustainable public transport system for the Red Line Corridor by focusing on the accessibility and mobility of people, organizing urban growth and public space along the selected corridor through the integration of land-use and transport planning (transit-oriented development), providing a holistic solution for integrated urban mobility and bearing a demonstration value as the first third-generation BRT line in Karachi.

Specific duties include:

  • Supervise and establish a framework/guideline document to ensure to maintain a safe and healthy working environment which complies with statutory requirements.
  • Keep staff informed of their health and safety responsibilities and role in taking appropriate steps for health and safety.
  • Provide guidance and identify role for the Health and Safety Engineers to take all reasonable precautions to maintain the health and safety of the Contractor’s Personnel.
  • Supervise that the Contractor provides all essential medical staff, first aid facilities, sick bay and ambulance service required at the Site and at any accommodation for Contractor’s and Employer’s Personnel, and that suitable arrangements are made for all necessary welfare and hygiene requirements and for the prevention of epidemics.
  • Ensure that appropriate gears and tools required for the safety of the personnel are available during the construction.
  • Review the Site-Specific Health and Safety Management Plan (SSHSMP) and make recommendations as needed.
  • Undertake formal monthly safety audits throughout all stages of the Project.
  • Prepare the Project Execution Plan, which inter alia, includes how management of SSHSMP is to be addressed throughout all stages of the Project.
  • Assist in supervision and implementation of environmental management plan (EMP), Health & Safety Management Plans (HSMP) and Traffic Management Plan (TMP)
  • Manage health and safety in relation to the consulting services assignment and comply with the country specific requirements and regulations in relation to COVID-19.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have a Master’s degree in engineering or other related fields, including internationally recognized professional qualifications.
  • Must have at least 12 years of experience managing health safety and environmental issues at the workplace
  • Must possess proven credentials in managing health and safety issues in construction projects, preferably FIDIC-based contracts or contracts having detailed provisions and protocols on managing the health, safety, and environment during the project execution
  • Prior experience with Asian Development Bank (ADB) is highly desired.
