The American Bar Association (ABA) has an opportunity for an unpaid intern to gain valuable experience while contributing to the important work of the ABA. The details of the unpaid internship opportunity are as follows:

ABA Department/Section/Entity: ABA ROLI Latin America & Caribbean Division

Work Location: Combination of in office and remote/telework

Duration of Internship: twelve (12) weeks. If your academic institution or relevant program requires a different duration, please make note of such requirement in your cover letter and provide any supporting documentation for the ABA to consider.

Unpaid: This is an unpaid internship. Participation in the internship is not an offer of employment, and successful completion of the internship program does not entitle the selected intern to an employment offer from the ABA.

Description of Internship Opportunity:

ABA ROLI’s Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) Division seeks an unpaid intern to collaborate with the division on rule of law programs across the region. The intern will engage in a wide range of tasks including, but not limited to, developing outreach materials and reports, conducting targeted research, assisting to edit progress reports, and coordinating the development of monitoring and evaluation tracking systems. The intern will also participate in exploration of opportunities for new programs, for example, conducting research for new program development and potential funding opportunities within the scope of ABA ROLI’s programs. The intern will also work closely with DC and regional staff to assist in the development of concept notes or proposals.

Duration: The usual minimum expected period for an internship with the LAC Division is 3 months for no more than 20 hours a week. The summer internship term is from June to August.

Main Responsibilities include:

•Research for potential funding opportunities within the scope of ABA ROLI’s programs.

•Research and present findings to team on various topics including current events, trends, and technical thematic areas relevant to ABA ROLI’s current and past work.

•Working closely with DC and regional field staff to assist in the development of concept notes or proposals.

•Assisting the ABA ROLI LAC division team with reviewing and editing monthly, quarterly and annual reports of existing projects.

•Attending outside events (webinars, roundtables, etc.) on behalf of ABA ROLI and taking notes.

Required Qualifications:

•Interest in rule of law, civil society engagement, civic education, legal clinical education, or other relevant subjects.

•In the process of obtaining or already possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications:

•Working fluency in Spanish.

•Creativity and the ability to use storytelling to build support for our work.

•Strong research and writing skills.

•Candidates who have or are currently working toward a law degree or a master’s degree in a relevant field.

Eligibility: Candidates must be 18 years old or older and:

•currently enrolled in (or in a deferred enrollment/gap year status recognized by) a post-secondary academic institution (i.e. undergraduate, graduate) and in a program/area of study directly related to the purpose of the internship program; or

•a recent (i.e. up to one (1) year) graduate of a post-secondary academic institution (i.e. undergraduate, graduate) with a degree in a program/area of study directly related to the purpose of the internship program.
