Job Description - GIS Technician

Background

The Ontario Land Trust Alliance (OLTA) is an environmental charitable organization, with a mission to empower a vibrant and enduring land conservation community in Ontario. OLTA accomplishes this through providing direct support for nature conservation and stewardship, offering training and educational programs; promoting community networking; helping to ensure land trusts meet (and exceed) a set of national standards and practices; and raising the profile of the work of land and nature trusts.

Job Description:

OLTA is seeking a GIS Technician to support OLTA’s work. The GIS Technician will report to and work closely with the Executive Director. The candidate will lead GIS activities, including property mapping, database management, Protected Areas reporting, and managing GIS applications.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Collecting and creating property data to maintain OLTA’s Land Trust Database
Assisting land trusts in reporting nature reserves to the Canadian Protected and Conserved Areas Database (CPCAD)
Supporting OLTA’s GIS projects by updating property recording, managing field data, and tracking species at risk and ecological data, with the guidance of the Director of Conservation Science.
Helping organize and run communication and outreach activities.
Acting as an OLTA resource on GIS and be a general technical resource to OLTA members. This includes responding to queries, liaising with members and other partner organizations and developing outreach materials.
Undertaking other activities to support OLTA such as attending events, developing communications, and assisting with other programs

The candidate must be eligible to receive funding as a youth candidate through Eco Canada’s Science Horizons Youth Internship Program.

Salary Range: $40,000 - $50,000 (annual)

Qualifications and Experience:

Required:

Eligible to receive funding as a youth under Eco Canada’s Science Horizons Youth Internship Program
Post-secondary degree in a related field.
Proficient use of Esri ArcMap/ArcPro and ArcGIS Online.
Assist with the implementation and maintenance of ArcGIS Field App Bundle (Survey123, Field Maps).
Familiarity in mapping and geographic principles (e.g., map projections and coordinate systems).
Maintain project data, geodatabases and correspondence in an organized manner.
Ability to produce maps, web maps and web apps as needed on projects.
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills (written and oral) including presentation skills and outreach materials.
Self-starter; ability to work independently with little supervision as well as collaboratively as part of a team.
Knowledge of lands trust and land stewardship and an interest in conservation science.
Experience with program/project coordination and delivery.
Ability to work outside regular business hours on some occasions.

Considered Assets:

Familiarity with various programming languages.
Experience in Web development and utilizing WordPress.
Familiarity with QGIS and different GIS file formats.

Employment Type:

This is a full-time position 37.5 hours per week for six months. The position is based at the OLTA office in downtown Toronto (currently remote working). Hours are flexible around core hours.

The successful candidate is expected to have access to their own computer, essential software (if possible), and a suitable workspace. The candidate may be asked to attend in-person staff meetings at an agreed upon location in the GTA in accordance with public health guidelines and advice.
