Description

  1. Background
    The Government of Bangladesh iras given an irnportance on replacing ferry crossings by bridges to ensure an uninterrupted road communication. In national and regional highways most of the bridges have been constructeci on tire river gaps. In Ziilalregionai road alignments a number of bridges are yet to be constructed. The proposed Nalua-Baherchar Bridge over the river Pandab-Paira at 27th Km of Barishal (Dinerarpool)-Laxmipasha-Dumki road (2-8044) under Patuakhali Road Division. This road is a RHD district highway (Z-8044) which starts from Dinerarpool of Barishal district and ends at Durnki upazilla under Patuakhali district. It is one c.f the Prime I\4inister (PM)committed project of Bangladesh Government. The Project aims to establish direct road communication between south-west region and Dhaka city which will enhance the econornic and social developinent oir tlrat region. The inter and intraregional movement of passengers and freight through a direct route will be promoted once the bridge is constructed. An econornic t-easibility study was carried out under RHD economic circle. The hydrology and nrorphology study were conducted by River Research lnstitute (RRI). The Government
    of Bangladesh (the govemment) has signed a loan agreernent rvith the OPEC Fund for International Developrnent (OFID) to implement the said bridge project. in line with that, the OFID wili bear cost of civil construction (10076), consultancy services jointly with GoB, anci
    RHD's institutional capacity building cost (100%). The remaining cost will be funded by GoB.

2.    Objectives and purpose of the assignment

The main objectives of the Consultant's assignrnent are as follows;
a) Survey and investigations of traffic, soil, topography, and all necessary data required.
b) Engineering ciesign in details and preparation of documents;
c) Comprehensive supervision of project implementation activities carried out by the contractors to ensure cornplete compliance with the technical specifications and various stipulations in the contract documents;
d) Civil works contracts administration according to their Conditions of Contract, and in particular, exercise PIC's authority and fulfill obligations stipulated in the Conditions of Contract as the Engineer.
e) Quality assurance of the civil works calried out by the contractors;
0 Monitor progress of construction works according to work program.
g) Monitor progress of various project activities including satbguard activities to cornply with the applicable policy, rules, regulations and guidelines of OFID
h) Render administrative, financial, and other services required within the scope of this assignment with due care and diiigence and to assisr relevant RHD officiais in carrying out their duties.
i) Completion of services within stipulated tirae limit.

3.    Scope

The scope includes preparing detailed engineering design, bidding documents, and construction supervision fbr a bridge approxirnately 1300m (Main-S00rn Box Girder+viaduct-800m PC Girder) long, comprising standard multilane dual carriageway with pedestrian walkway on each side. The navigational openings shall not less than 76.2m wide and 18.30m high above standard high-water level. The major project components are shown briefly in Table 1. The consultants will also provide all necessary supports to the procurement of civil works. supervision. monitoring, and the contractors regarding the job to be done in construction phase as and when required.

Design of Bridge Project in Bangladesh

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil / Geotechnical engineering
  • Min. 18 years of professional experience in related field.
  • Min. 12 years of design experience as Geotechnical/ Foundation engineer in highways and bridge projects.
  • Preference for the expert who is experienced in Bangladesh or nearby regions.
  • Familiar with relevant software for pile design (may not be stated in a CV but would be questioned during the interview)
  • Input - 3.5 MM intermittent upto Feb 2025.
