Communications and Outreach Coordinator

LAW is looking for an experienced, and enthusiastic Communications and Outreach Coordinator to help expand the Rohingya Crisis programme’s communications reach and impact, in particular through social media engagement, advocacy campaigns, and traditional media activities that will showcase and amplify our work, as well as to reach our clients, their communities and the broader public to advocate on behalf of individuals and communities who have suffered human rights violations and abuses.

LAW is an independent, non-profit organisation comprised of human rights lawyers and jurists working in fragile and conflict affected areas in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. LAW has a particular focus on gender equality and sexual and gender-based violence, the rule of law and accountability and transformative justice - working to bring justice to those who need it most.

LAW’s portfolio includes multiple ground-breaking cases, which utilise creative legal strategies on behalf of victims and survivors from some of the most challenging contexts, representing more than 1000 clients. LAW’S WORK IN BANGLADESH

LAW’s ground-breaking programme in Bangladesh seeks to ensure meaningful Rohingya participation in the ongoing international justice processes seeking accountability for their persecution in Myanmar, including engagement with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (The Gambia v. Myanmar); the ongoing investigation by the Officer of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the work of the Independent Investigative Mechanism on Myanmar (IIMM). Additionally, LAW undertakes innovative strategic litigation on behalf of more than 400 Rohingya clients and ensures Rohingya voices are prioritised throughout its advocacy.

A key aspect of the programme is LAW’s network of over 60 Rohingya Survivor Advocates, who are given ongoing training to provide legal information to the survivors of sexual and gender-based violence about international justice mechanisms related to the Rohingya Crisis and provide them support in accessing services. In addition to empowering Rohingya women and girls, LAW works closely with male and Hijra (third gender, transgender, intersex) survivors of sexual and gender-based violence to ensure their access to justice.

MORE ABOUT THIS POSITION

Where? The ideal candidate will be based in South Asia or South-East Asia region. This is a remote/ home-based position with international travel opportunities. You must have the right to work in your preferred country of location. Travel to field office(s) in Cox’s bazar, Bangladesh or the region may be required.

Duration? This position is funded and available for 12 months with the possibility to be extended subject to funding.

The position is on a full-time basis with the possibility of working part-time for the right candidate.

More detail: You are a team player with significant expertise in communications, advocacy and external representation and advocacy, including media engagements or journalism, along with producing, designing, and developing communication materials for national and international platforms to cover a wide range of audiences.

Role Overview:

The Communications and Outreach Coordinator will report directly to LAW’s Programme Manager in Bangladesh, working in close collaboration with the Communications Manager based in Geneva and will promote LAW's work in the Bangladesh and the sub region, and increase visibility, profile key events and advocacy and outreach activities.

The postholder will perform duties in accordance with the responsibilities outlined below:

Communications, advocacy and outreach

• Coordinate within the team to document thematic reports on programme activities that materialise LAW’s vision on community engagement and survivor-centred approach;
• Support the implementation of the advocacy strategy and design products that can be shared with both internal and external stakeholders;
• Develop activity calendar for the projects covering plans for social media; website, press, events, awards and external communication;
• Draft donor briefings with visually appealing stories to highlight LAW’s impact of projects;
• Support LAW hosted events: liaising with panellists, preparing concept notes, agendas, flyers, and circulating all to participants;
• Design and develop posters, logos, infographics, videos, and other fact sheets and tool kits as per the programme requirement;
• Monitor, track indicators and evaluate media coverage; campaigns, publications prints and digital to maximize efficiency;
• Draft press releases, statements and articles articulating project impact and achievements effectively; Draft human-interest stories;
• Coordinate and support preparation of key messaging, LAW’s research reports and legal filings and concept notes for events.
• Establish relationships and maintain list of national and regional network and journalistic contacts;
• Conduct field visits and take produce impact stories and communications material for championing and profiling successful stories and social media posts;
• Any other task requested from the Programme Manager and the Communications Manager.

Social Media and Digital

• Support in the creation, designing of innovative, information toolkits (audio, digital) that will be used by Survivor Advocates for their field work.
• Develop a social media plan and identify various audiences for our social media channels, and plan how to increase LAW’s engagement nationally and globally.
• Design, deliver and maintain engaging content across our key social media channels, including ‘X’, to create impactful stories, case studies, and other content to engage with our audiences.
• Maintain and update the website content, collating inputs from the county programme;
• Research and analyze performance on the various platforms and make recommendations on how to improve our communications.

About You

• Legal right to work in your country;
• A bachelor’s degree in international relations, human rights, communications, marketing, media relations, journalism or related field;
• Minimum 4 years demonstrated experience working in journalism, advocacy or communications in a similar role;
• Demonstrated experience of communications and social media content development and dissemination;
• Track record and experience of working on issues relating to the Rohingya crisis and Myanmar context required;
• Relevant experience working with international NGOs is preferred, ideally in human rights or humanitarian field;Journalist professional background is preferred;
• Excellent written and oral skills in English required; with the ability to clearly articulate information to various audiences and stakeholders;
• Ability to work on own initiative and part of the wider team;
• Knowledge of multimedia production and editing; Experience designing graphics, multimedia content and design software; Experience in photography, ideally with DSLR cameras or similar (desirable)
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and strong technical literacy;
• International travel to LAW’s Programmes including field missions will be required.
