Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) is a dynamic, international non-governmental organisation. We work with people affected by violent conflicts to enhance their security and dignity through Unarmed Civilian Protection (UCP). We work to reduce violence, protect civilians in countries affected by violent conflict and its  aftermath, and help transform the world’s response to conflict situations.

Overview

NP is in the process of setting up its country program in DRC to support the strengthening of safety and security of conflict-affected communities in South Kivu and North Kivu. Working through Unarmed Civilian Protection (UCP), NP centres local communities in preventing violence and promoting positive peace. Due to rapidly evolving contextual developments, NP is also simultaneously looking to scale up its response capacity and is in the process of envisioning its response activities.

 

Job Summary

The Team Leader (TL) is responsible for a mobile NP team. This entails ensuring an effective implementation of civilian protection programming while providing for field-based personnel management, financial and administrative functions, coordinating with the country office regarding logistics and procurement and ensuring compliance with NP’s security policies and procedures and country strategy. The TL is the primary representative of NP at coordination meetings with NGO partners and government authorities and departments in the field team’s area of operation. The holder of this role is expected to be flexible, creative and have high levels of adaptability. It is expected that they come with significant UCP experience as well as prior engagements in responses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensuring that all staff align with and uphold the organization's mission and values. 
  • Fostering positive relationships with stakeholders, communities, and partners to enhance the organization's reputation. 
  • Contributing to response design and pro-actively identifying opportunities for NP engagement for discussion with the wider team
  • Providing leadership and direction to the field team, fostering a collaborative and motivated work environment in what is a dynamic and destabilizing context
  • Contributing to the generation of creative and effective program strategies and sharing insights with higher management. 
  • Ensuring on-site oversight to assess project implementation and address issues promptly. 
  • Enforcing organizational processes and protocols to maintain operational efficiency and transparency. 
  • Ensuring that reports meet high standards, are submitted on time, and accurately reflect project outcomes. 
  • Tracking financial resources to ensure adherence to budgetary allocations and identifying areas for cost optimization. 
  • Implementing measures to safeguard the well-being of field teams and collaborating with external partners to address security concerns.

Qualifications

  • University degree in refugee law, human rights, international human rights law, international humanitarian law, negotiation, mediation, human security, or related fields.
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience in UCP with Team Leader experience
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor new team members
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a context where they don’t speak the language
  • Demonstrated management experience in working in a complex security environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with state authorities, negotiation and mediation.
  • Demonstrated ability to live, work and solve problems independently and effectively in remote, highly challenging locations.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze conflict, security, and political contexts.
  • Contextual knowledge of DRC and the Great Lakes region is highly desirable

Other requirements

  • Immediate availability and available for a minimum of three months
  • The candidate must have a valid Yellow Fever certificate
  • French or Swahili an added advantage 
  • The candidate must be able to acquire a DRC visa (supported by NP) as well as travel in the region
  • The candidate must have at least 9 months validity on their passport and multiple pages still available within it
