About the Climate and Energy Team
The Climate and Energy (CE) team works to decarbonize the highest emitting sectors of the U.S economy, including electric power, oil and gas, steel, and transportation. This sectoral approach involves direct engagement with investors and companies to advance sustainable solutions, transition current business practices to mitigate the worst impacts of the climate crisis and create a more just and equitable world.
About the Role
The Senior Director, Electric Power, leads the CE Electric Power team and directs strategic oversight of electric power work throughout the organization. The Senior Director provides oversight of Ceres work with investors, companies and other key stakeholders focused on encouraging power companies to make ambitious climate commitments, develops climate transition action plans, makes timely progress towards climate commitments, and advocates for leading climate and clean energy policies. This position will collaborate closely with various teams across the organization working on corporate climate commitments and policy. The Senior Director, Electric Power, will manage key projects and campaigns related to the electric power and natural gas distribution sectors. This is a full-time salaried position, and reports to the Program Director, Climate & Energy.
Specific duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Lead and direct Ceres’ comprehensive electric power work across the entire organization.
- Supervise electric power program staff, including conducting regular performance assessments, leading annual team and individual goal-setting processes, managing team budget, conducting quarterly check-in meetings and more frequent team managements meetings as necessary.
- Utilizing Ceres’ theory of change to develop Ceres’ overall strategy for decarbonizing the Electric Power sector in alignment with the best climate science.
- Work closely with Ceres’ Development Team to develop fundraising proposals to support Ceres’ electric power sector work and generate new ideas to secure additional funding.
- Advance Ceres’ cross-organizational emissions-reduction strategy on engaging companies in related sectors, potentially including transportation, oil & gas, and heavy industry.
- Provide guidance to and collaborate with Ceres’ Policy Network on setting and pursuing state and federal clean energy policy priorities and strategies, including through research, writing, advocacy, and constituent outreach and organizing.
- Collaborate with Ceres’ Company Network to support engagement plans with electric and gas utilities that are members of the Ceres Company Network.
- Present Ceres’ strategic and advocacy voice in engagements with external partners and at strategic convenings and events regarding the electric power sector.
- Ensure that Ceres’ electric power sector work addresses Just Transition (JT) and helps advance emerging JT best practices for the sector.
- Partner closely with the CE Senior Communications Manager to develop and execute a leading Communications plan to broadcast Ceres electric power success stories and impact.
- As organizational needs arise, and upon successful internal readiness evaluation by the communications and marketing team and relevant program leaders, this person may be called upon to serve as a public spokesperson for external speaking and media engagements and/or as a lead or contributing author for thought leadership. Duties could include managing editorial projects from start to finish, leading and/or supporting message and content development for reports, briefs, and op-eds and media materials, as well as managing consultants and partners.
- Develop Ceres’ intellectual capital and thought leadership (for example: analyses, white papers and reports, facilitation and training guides, presentations) for critical audiences including policymakers, companies, investors, trade publications and trade associations.
- Travel as necessary for conferences, speaking opportunities, and company and investor engagements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience required.
- Minimum of twelve (12) years of full-time related experience and seven (7) years of experience in the electric power sector required.
- Strong connections networks across the electric power sector, along with the ability to engage at the business, board and CEO level.
- Knowledge of, and experience related to related to the electric power sector, climate change, clean energy investment and finance, federal and state policies and agencies relevant to the sector, including the Inflation Reduction Act, EPA and FERC amongst others, and corporate sustainability issues.
- Experience supervising staff, including ability to provide training, support staff development, and manage sensitive personnel matters.
- Understanding of business and financial sector capabilities, methods, and practices for achieving positive sustainability outcomes.
- Fluency with corporate sustainability policies and disclosures, frameworks and platforms.
- Sound judgment, sensitivity to diverse constituencies, excellent interpersonal skills, superior leadership ability, strong initiative and motivation.
- Successful record of organizing and executing multiple projects and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent research and writing skills.
- Experience supervising staff members or external consultants.
- Strong meeting facilitation and verbal communication skills.
- Experience working with the media, a plus.
- Knowledge regarding clean energy investment and finance.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Proficient with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and e-mail computer applications.

Compensation and BenefitsThe hiring salary is $130,100 – $155,000 with competitive benefits (Pay Grade 20).
