About the Team

Mobile Justice Teams (MJTs) are groups of local and international experts, and practitioners collaborating with, and in support of, local justice actors, such as Ukraine’s Office of the Prosecutor General (OPG) and Regional Prosecutor Offices (RPOs), to advance Ukraine's capacity to hold perpetrators accountable and pursue cases against high-ranking perpetrators. The MJTs are organised across regional and thematic areas to address context-specific and cross-cutting legal issues. The teams work in the most affected regions of Ukraine to provide advisory and case-building support, focusing on supporting prosecutors and investigators in their investigations and prosecutions.

Duty Station: Kyiv, Ukraine

Contract Duration: 7 Months

The Role

The Junior National Lawyer will be a member of the Sexual & Gender based Violence (SGBV) thematic MJT and will assist in building the capacity of Ukrainian legal professionals, mainly investigators and prosecutors, to investigate and prosecute war crimes and other international crimes, other violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law. Key responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Undertaking systematisation and analysis of large amounts of data.
  • Carrying out legal and factual research.
  • Assisting in drafting project deliverables.
  • Facilitating meetings and other interactions with relevant stakeholders including interpretations where required.
  • Providing other assistance to senior lawyers and senior investigators.

Your Background

  • University degree in Law.
  • 2 years +professional legal experience practising law within a law firm, prosecution service, court, etc.
  • Knowledge of the Ukrainian justice system, including criminal and criminal procedure legislation.
  • Ideally ICL / IHL experience, in a practical application.
  • Practical experience working with Ukrainian justice actors.
  • Flexible, able to work in a changeable environment.
  • Able to provide written and oral translations of legal texts.
  • Practical experience of working with highly sensitive material and an ability to demonstrate the requisite skill in storing, sharing and working with such material.
  • Experience in working on conflict-related sexual violence.
  • Fluency in English and Ukrainian, written and verbal skills.
  • Fluency or competency in Russian is advantageous.
