MiCT is seeking a migration and human rights legal expert who can provide legal advice on humanitarian relocation opportunities for journalists from crisis and conflict regions. MiCT invites interested and qualified applicants to submit proposals by 10.08.2025

  1. Introducing MiCT

Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) is a non-profit organisation working in the area of media development and protection. Across three continents and 15 countries, MiCT supports the protection of journalists and media producers, facilitates programme and content development, and conducts media research and monitoring, in addition to supporting the financial viability of our partners.

2. The Program

The Human Rights & Migration legal expert is to support the MiCT Critical Voices Fellowship for Critical Voices which is aimed at media professionals from conflict and crisis regions who share a common value in their professional journalistic integrity. The program is currently focused on journalists and media makers from across the globe. Fellows receive financial support, expert safety advice, online training, legal advice, psycho-social support, and access to a global community of like-minded media professionals.

3. Description of the role

To support Fellows who are having to move into exile for security reasons, MiCT is looking for a human rights and migration legal expert to provide guidance and legal advice on visa and work permit processes and requirements for media makers. The service should cover the following aspects:

  • Conducting thorough assessments and advice to individual Fellows on their personal situation to determine eligibility for humanitarian visas in various safe third countries
  • Assist in preparing and submitting humanitarian visa applications, ensuring all necessary documentation is accurate and complete
  • Assisting the team in navigating the visa application procedures for European countries, US and/or Australia
  • Conduct trainings and provide updates for MiCT team members on visa application processes
  • Preparing Fellows for visa interviews

The service pertains to supporting roughly 15 Fellows in their resettlement process on a freelance, needs-basis, . The contract is set to run from August 15th 2025 until June 30th 2026.

4. Application Requirements

Successful applicants should be able to provide proof of the following:

  • Specialist knowledge of migration and human rights law globally, particularly in Germany
  • Extensive experience in writing humanitarian case files and collecting the necessary information in a sensitive manner
  • Familiarity with the specific challenges faced by media makers in the visa and work permit processes is a benefit
  • Experience in sensitive handling of personal information
  • Flexibility to work across time zones, with translators and through various means of communication
  • Excellent communication and advocacy skills, with strong links to existing global, migration support structures
  • Fluency in English is required, working knowledge of other languages spoken in crisis and conflict regions such as Afghanistan, Sudan and Myanmar is an asset
