Project Description: The BioGov project is a five-year (2025-2029), Global Affairs Canada-funded initiative implemented by Alinea International. It supports the Government of Suriname to strengthen inclusive, coordinated, and gender-responsive biodiversity governance, with a focus on marine and coastal ecosystems. Working closely with national ministries, Indigenous and Tribal Peoples (ITPs), and civil society, BioGov helps operationalize Suriname’s 2024-2035 National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP).
The BioGov Project has recently been approved and is currently undertaking start up activities. A project baseline survey and project launch are planned for the last quarter of 2025, which will be followed by a Gender Based Analysis (GBA+). The BioGov Project will be based in the office of the project’s primary Government partner, The Ministry of Oil and Gas and Environment at their headquarters in Paramaribo.
The Role
The GESI Specialist will support and strengthen inclusive biodiversity governance in Suriname, with a particular focus on enhancing the participation and leadership of women and ITPs in NBSAP implementation. The Specialist will work across government ministries, ITP organizations, and civil society partners to mainstream gender-responsive approaches and embed inclusive practices in biodiversity governance structures and implementation mechanisms.
This is a part-time consultancy role, ideally suited to a mid- or senior-level expert with strong experience in gender equality, Indigenous rights, and social inclusion in Suriname or the wider Caribbean region.
