Description

Learning and Communications Intern – Stand As My Witness (SAMW)

About CIVICUS

CIVICUS exists to defend people power. As a growing global alliance of over 15,000 members in 189 countries, we work together to monitor violations of basic civic freedoms, call out the perpetrators of violations and strengthen the power of people to organise by supporting a more accountable, effective and innovative civil society. We strive to promote excluded voices, especially from the Global South

About the Role

Stand As My Witness was created in response to a growing trend in which civil society actors were arrested for their human rights work. Formerly known as Civil Society Behind Bars, the initiative is one of CIVICUS’ most effective strategies when it comes to sounding the alarm about the plights faced by HRDs around the world. As part of the campaign’s goal to spread awareness about some of the world’s imprisoned human rights defenders on their website.

The Learning and Communications Intern will support CIVICUS’ Stand As My Witness (SAMW) Campaign, an initiative advocating for the release of human rights defenders unjustly imprisoned around the world. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience within CIVICUS’ Advocacy & Campaigns Cluster, contributing to global communication strategies and international campaigning efforts.

Key Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in communications, Development, Journalism, MEL, or a related field.
  • Fluent written and spoken English; proficiency in additional Global South languages is an advantage.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt messages for diverse audiences.
  • Experience in designing and facilitating learning and collaborative initiatives.
  • Experience working with the civic society organisations and in the human rights sector.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural and multidisciplinary team.
  • Working knowledge of Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Russian or French is an advantage.
  • Experience working with advanced Graphic design/Photoshop and audio/video editing software is an advantage.
