Project Description:
The Reproductive Education and Adolescent Community Health (REACH) in the Eastern Caribbean project is a four-year initiative led by Alinea International with partners OECS Commission and Caribbean Technical Assistance and Education Center for Health (C-TECH), and funder Global Affairs Canada. The project aims to foster adolescent health and wellness by both enhancing adolescent friendly services and creating positive community conditions for adolescents to access their right to health, with an emphasis on sexual and reproductive health. REACH works in Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent & The Grenadines using a strengths-based, inclusive approach to ensure “no adolescent is left behind.”

About the work
REACH project takes an inclusive, strengths-based approach, grounded in partnership. Currently, REACH Project is undertaking set up activities, conducting a baseline survey on all islands, and preparing for a launch in October. The REACH office is based in Castries, St. Lucia and houses a team of five. Two additional positions are based at the OECS Commission, and a technical pool of advisors is based at C-TECH Jamaica and at Alinea Canada. Intermittent travel to the four implementing islands is expected for various team members.

The Role
REACH is seeking a Communications Assistant to play a key role in fostering adolescent health and well being through effective communication to funders, stakeholders, beneficiaries and the general public. The position will be responsible for implementing communications strategies in the Caribbean. The Communications Assistant reports directly to the Field Manager and works remotely with the Alinea Communications team in Canada. Some regional travel may be involved. An initial contract will transition to a salary and benefits package once Alinea REACH is fully registered in St. Lucia.

The Communications Assistant will:

  • Co-develop and implement communications strategies for the project in the Caribbean. The strategy will publicize the project achievements and acknowledge Global Affairs Canada’s contribution for the entire project duration. It will include the following: target groups, including project stakeholders, funders, beneficiaries and the general public., and the visibility and recognition form;
  • Update and maintain the Visibility and Recognition Activities Planning Form for the entire project duration;
  • In conjunction with the Canadian Corporate Communications team, ensure that funders and partners are correctly acknowledged and that all materials used in communications meet Alinea’s brand and quality standards;
  • Create and post social media content per the communications strategy and to build momentum around the project;
  • Create web content;
  • Use strengths-based language to align with REACH methods
  • Contribute to reviews of materials and packages, such as simple language checks, images, formatting, editing
  • Plan, coordinate and engage for approved media events
  • Adhere to the highest ethical standards including informed consent, non-biased images, child and youth protection;
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with REACH team and stakeholders to ensure any content writing/editing/review requests are fulfilled accurately and without errors
  • Support development of media materials such as press releases, media advisories, and public service announcements
  • Monitor uptake of REACH stories by media and outreach / spread on social media
  • Implement a communications tracking system and provide inputs on results to monthly reports and semi-annual reports
  • Other tasks, as required

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in communications, marketing, journalism or a related field (i.e. Bachelor or equivalent);
  • Minimum of two years of working experience in communications
  • Knowledge of communications, social media and public relations;
  • Experience and understanding of projects in the Eastern Caribbean;
  • Demonstrated experience with creating digital and print communications materials, including but not limited to; social media posts, blogs, press releases, posters, and advertisements.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, tact and diplomacy
  • Understanding and experience working with Global Affairs Canada funded programs is an asset;
  • Knowledge of / experience working with youth an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to treat all with professionalism, respect and equity, avoiding bias in communications;
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity in health
