Project Description:
The United for Care-sensitive Approaches to Rights and Empowerment (UCARE) Project is a five-year project (2024-2029) funded by Global Affairs Canada that seeks to enhance the realization of women and adolescent girls’ rights to equal distribution of domestic work and reduced burden of unpaid care work in Northern Ghana.

UCARE works collaboratively with national partners, regional and local governments to create an evidence-based, gender-responsive and care-sensitive policy and programming environment, and with families in northern Ghana to improve the agency and decision making of women and adolescent girls to exercise their rights related to recognized and valued unpaid care work.
The UCARE project partners with local organizations SEND, NETRIGHT and women’s rights organizations using the Gender Model Families approach to recognize, reduce and redistribute the burden of UCW more equitably within households. UCARE will be implemented in 10 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Northern, Northeast and Savannah regions, covering both urban and rural communities, reaching 225,000 women and men, and adolescent girls and boys.

About the work
The role of the Volunteer encompasses two key areas of programming: communications and advocacy. This Volunteer position will provide additional technical and program support to the social advocacy and communications activities approved in the 2026/27 (Y3) annual workplan.
NETRIGHT’s primary role is to develop a national advocacy strategy for unpaid care work and to provide technical and program support to its northern member partners to implement targeted social advocacy activities around UCW. NETRIGHT also has a specific role in developing toolkits and training the three women’s rights organizations participating in the UCARE project to develop and implement specific advocacy campaigns and tactics to achieve UCARE’s goal of recognizing and including UCW in the plans and priorities of targeted MMDAs.

SEND implements the GMF program and within that has a role in advocating for social change within households to redistribute UCW more equitably among family members. Alinea’s role is to coordinate and align all advocacy and communications activities to achieve inclusion of UCW in MMDA plans and policies.
All partners will undertake communications activities as part of the implementation of their program responsibilities. Alinea’s role is to ensure that all communications meet the Alinea International’s policy mandates and standards, and that partner communications activities are coordinated and aligned with the broader UCARE workplan and objectives. The Volunteer will also play a role in ensuring that advocacy and communications activities of partner organizations are closely coordinated to achieve greater impact.

The Role
The Volunteer will work closely with the Field Team and the two key implementing partners (SEND and NETRIGHT) to implement advocacy and communications activities as planned. The Volunteer will work under the direct supervision of the Field Manager in Tamale and report to the Project Director in Canada. The Volunteer will have an international travel expense package.
