Position: Coordinator, GESI & Advocacy – Accelerating Impact for YoungWomen (AIM) Programme, BRAC Ghana
Job Location: Accra, Ghana – Country Office
About the Role:
BRAC Ghana a Non- Governmental Organisation (NGO) is seeking a Coordinator, Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) and Advocacy to lead the implementation of advocacy, policy, social empowerment, and community engagement activities, with a strong focus on gender and social inclusion, disability inclusion, SRHR, SGBV, and community engagement which includes mobilisation, dialogues, and evidence-based advocacy. The position holder will strengthen staff capacity through targeted training, technical assistance, and quality control in advocacy, SGBV, and SRHR case management and referral systems. Working directly with AIM programme participants and country-level teams, the coordinator will advance the programme’s advocacy agenda, build the capacity of Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) to advocate for their rights, and support them in identifying and leveraging key advocacy spaces. This work aims to sustain the programme’s long-term impact and foster continued self-advocacy among programme alumni in their communities.
Additionally, the s/he will serve as the in-country knowledge management focal point, ensuring effective documentation, knowledge sharing, and dissemination of best practice to enhance the overall impact and effectiveness of the programme. The role will also serve as the champion and custodian of the AIM Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) social empowerment (life skills) curriculum-based activities.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Advocacy engagement
Support the Programme Manager in the development, annual workplan, and comprehensive rollout of the AIM programme Enabling Environment strategy.
Coordinate tailored support and capacity strengthening for programme participants and youth advocates on essential skills, including evidence-based advocacy, negotiation, and effective communications/media engagement.
Coordinate and provide direct support to national and subnational-level advocacy initiatives
Support country-level research to facilitate evidence-based advocacy,including contributing to the development and dissemination ofpolicy briefs and IEC fact sheets targeting decision-makers at alllevels.
Work closely with the programme team to institutionalise the YouthDevelopment Centres (YDCs) as platforms for grassroots advocacyand undertake activities to deepen their impact at the communitylevel.
Represent AIM in national and regional forums as required, andprovide support to the M&E Manager to assess advocacy outcomesand produce comprehensive progress reports.
2. Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI and SRHR)
Lead in enhancing the capacity of regional staff and other stakeholders in GESI, GBV, SRHR, disability inclusion, GBV reporting, and women’s rights advocacy, as well as community mobilisation facilitation. Also, ensure YDC member capacity on SGBV and SRH referral systems is built..
Lead, champion and take custody of the AIM AGYW social empowerment (life skills) curriculum.
Coordinate the identification of participants with disabilities during household surveys to ensure disability inclusion and support across programme components.
Lead the implementation of SBCC dialogue sessions at the community level, engaging local leaders, religious leaders, cultural leaders, and other duty bearers.
Guide community leaders in developing accountability action plans based on commitments made during SBCC dialogues, and take the lead and ensure the progress and sustainability.
Identify and adapt safe, accessible, and inclusive club spaces, ensuring reasonable accommodations such as disability-friendly modifications, gender-segregated restrooms, dignity kits, and baby-changing stations.
Prioritise the needs of marginalised groups, including persons with disabilities, adolescent mothers, and out-of-school girls.
3. Knowledge Management & Reporting
Work closely with the Senior Manager – Knowledge Management &Learning (AIM) at the central team to support the knowledge management component at the country level
Work as a knowledge champion and help support process documentation, good practice and success story compilation.
Stay up-to-date on the latest research and remain informed on issues such as women’s social and economic development, youth-led advocacy, alumni engagement, group self-governance, and gender equality.
Support and coordinate with country-level grants managers, M&E, and Finance teams to ensure timely submission of quality narrative and financial reports quarterly.
Support the AIM programme manager in the AIM programme database management, including pipeline reports, grant stewardship, and prospect research.
4. Outreach, external engagement, and communications
Map and engage key stakeholders to operationalise the Enabling Environment strategy.
Lead young women's participation in major events (e.g., International Women’s Day, 16 Days of Activism) to drive advocacy.
Strengthen and manage partnerships with policymakers and government officials to promote priority policy changes and investments.
Research and identify high-level national/regional events to share the AIM programme's evidence, lessons, and priorities with key decision-makers and practitioners.
5. Monitoring and Learning
Ensure appropriate, timely, and accurate data collection against agreed GESI disaggregated indicators to enable both internal and external reporting.
Work closely with the M&E and knowledge management teams to collate lessons learnt and best practice among internal and external stakeholders.
Work with the MEL team to identify and incorporate project-suitable accountability mechanisms that are accessible to marginalised groups.
Manage and strengthen MIS, programme/management datacollection, and reporting on implemented activities.
6. Safeguarding Responsibilities:
1.Ensure the safety of team members from any harm, abuse, neglect, harassment and exploitation to achieve the programme’s goals on safeguarding implementation
2. Act as a key source of support, guidance and expertise on safeguarding for establishing a safe working environment
3. Practice, promote and endorse the issues of safeguarding policy among team members and ensure the implementation of safeguarding standards in every course of action
4. Follow the safeguarding reporting procedure in case any reportable incident takes place and encourage others to do the same.
Academic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree is a plus) in Social Sciences,Development studies, Community Development, Communication.
Required Skills, Competencies & Knowledge:
Prior experience in local-level advocacy, including experience withcommunity mobilisation and GESI
Ability to set up groups, with community support, for self-governance
Knowledge of training content and methodologies for youth onadvocacy and/or rights and GESI
Knowledge of the systemic barriers to girls' and women's social andeconomic development, particularly in the African context.
Good understanding of knowledge management systems
Excellent written and communication skills, including the ability tofoster productive working relationships with strategic partners anddiverse stakeholders, and good facilitation skills
Computer-literate and proficient in MS Office packages
Ability to coach and motivate colleagues with key advocacy messaging and skills.
Experience Requirements:
4 - 6 years’ experience in leading any of the following engagements -advocacy portfolios, GESI portfolios, community mobilisation, campaign management, stakeholder management, and/or supporting self-governance transition of youth groups, preferably in social and economic development.
A robust understanding of the policy landscape around AGYW’s social and economic development, preferably in the African context.
Prior experience in programme-related knowledge managementprocesses.
Prior experience working with women's and persons with disabilitygroups in advocacy and GESI.
