SINDH WATER & AGRICULTURE TRANSFORMATION (SWAT) PROJECT
Formulation of Sindh Strategic Water Plan (SSWP)
In accordance with key actions of the approved Sindh Water Policy-2023, Sindh Strategic Water Plan (SSWP) is to be prepared with financial assistance provided under Sindh Water & Agriculture Transformation (SWAT) Project to address key water and water related environmental and social issues highlighted in the Annex-9.1 of Environmental & Social Management Framework of SWAT Project1provides an overview of the alarming state of water-related environmental degradation and the driving forces that need to be addressed to reverse this decline.
The key measures needed to address the main water resources challenges in Sindh Province include:
Reducing land degradation caused by waterlogging and salinity
Managing climate-related risks including floods, droughts, heat, and sea level rise
Recalibrating water allocation regimes to ensure equity, economic efficiency, and sustainability
Reviving the Indus Delta ecosystem
Protecting and restoring wetlands and lakes in Sindh Province
Addressing severe water scarcity in Sindh drylands, Kohistan and Tharparkar/ Nara Desert
Strategically managing groundwater resources
Improving water quality in canals, natural water bodies, and along the coast.
Ensuring financial sustainability of water services (irrigation, water supply and sanitation).
