In the global policy setting, such as Agenda 2030 and SDGs, and in Nepal WASH Sector Development Plan (draft, SDP 2016-2030) the water quality, sustainability and functionality related aspects of WASH are becoming increasingly important. In Nepal the reinvestment cycle of WASH structures has already begun. Large number of old schemes are non-functional and need reinvestment to make and keep them operational. Thus, alongside with attending the remaining 10-13 % of population still unreached, major repairs or total rehabilitation of existing and deteriorating schemes are required. At the same time due allocation of funds for O&M, currently largely neglected, is needed.
The 4-year long SUSWA project is co-funded by the Government of Finland, and it will follow community-based approaches for constructing new rural WASH schemes, but in focus will be re-investments and functionality of existing systems. The Project targets to support establishment of efficient and transparent WASH governance at municipal level that would be capable to ensure safe, sustainable, inclusive WASH services and conditions for all.
The project target areas are found in rural municipalities of the Karnali Province.
