Why I left a permanent job for an independent consultant career. Experts’ Opinions (PART II)

Transitioning from being a full-time employee to becoming a consultant or contractor who is able to reap the financial rewards of providing expertise can seem like a challenging decision for many professionals. However, putting together a list of pros and cons of such a move has helped many to choose their perfect career path. This is Manasseh Igyuh’s story as well. Today, we invite you to find out what persuaded this young and ambitious consultant to dive into the world of international independent consultancy.

What was your previous permanent job? Could you mention some pros and cons related to transitioning to independent consulting?

Manasseh Igyuh, organizational development and institutional capacity building consultant

“My last position was Head of People & Organizational Development for the Nigeria office of a UK based non-profit (WaterAid). I liked the involvement with a respected organization doing the very impactful work of delivering much needed access to water, sanitation and hygiene services to the Nigerian people. I also appreciated the collegiate environment created for high performance and the opportunity to learn. On the flip side, the lack of flexibility to apply my experience, skills and competence beyond my primary function was self-limiting and frustrating.”

Why did you decide to switch to become an independent consultant? How easy or difficult was it to do so?

Working within organizational boundaries (mainly the thematic focus of my role) stifled my ability to apply my talents in pursuit of what I considered most important at this stage of my life. The decision to switch careers was not easy especially because besides loving my work and my colleagues, the fear of the unknown was there. I contemplated the switch for about two years.”

What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of choosing a career as an independent consultant?

“Being able to work on client projects across diverse sectors and geographies is an immense opportunity to learn and grow expertise and a network. You exercise better flexibility in planning and controlling the use of your time which is an immeasurable plus you get from being an independent consultant.”

How did the DevelopmentAid website help you in this transition?

“DevelopmentAid helped tremendously. As I kept reviewing open consultancy opportunities that were posted, it helped me gain confidence that there was enough work to do out there once you have the right experience and skills.”

What advice can you give for those who want to follow your career path?

“Don’t allow your fears to dominate you – take that bold step towards achieving   your dreams. However, carefully plan the switch bearing in mind the transition may not be easy or smooth.”
