📅 25 – 26 November 2021
      Fiji, Suva

The Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (PFSD) provides a unique platform to share perspectives and learn from one another on common priorities and approaches to address, inter alia, the twin crises of COVID-19 and climate change for the Pacific member States.

ESCAP will co-host the fifth PFSD with the Government of Fiji under the theme “Implementation of the 2030 Agenda in the context of COVID-19 and the Climate Emergency” to reflect the urgency of global climate actions, and the implications of the findings of the latest IPCC (Group 1) Report and the COP26 outcomes for the Pacific. The focus of the agenda is on implementing the 2030 Agenda in the context of COVID-19 and the climate crisis, social protection and inclusion, regional cooperation initiatives, and financing for development and climate actions.

The outcome of the PFSD will include clear messages, priorities, and recommended actions from the Pacific to inform deliberations at the 2022 Asia Pacific Forum for Sustainable Development (APFSD) and the report to the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF). An effort has been made to ensure close alignment between the agenda and the key priority issues highlighted by the recent meetings of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders and Ministers. There are commonalities between Pacific priorities and those of the UN at regional and global levels which can make for stronger messages and entry points into the regional (APFSD) and global (HLPF) processes and platforms

As in previous years, the PFSD will include a capacity-building workshop for the implementation and review of the 2030 Agenda with a focus on follow-up actions highlighted through Voluntary National Review (VNR).

Typical follow-up actions from VNRs presented by Pacific SIDS include:

  1. facilitating meaningful stakeholder engagement and mechanisms for institutionalized consultation with civil society;
  2. the deepening integration of the SDGs into national sustainable development strategies and development plans and budgets;
  3. accessing predictable and effective financing for development; and
  4. strengthening data availability and national monitoring and evaluation systems.
