IWRA organizes and supports international water congresses and events related to advancing water resources knowledge, policy, and management around the world. Since 1973, IWRA has held a World Water Congress every three years in various locations around the world.
The objective of the World Water Congress is to provide a meeting place to share experiences, promote discussion, and present new knowledge, research results, and new developments in the field of water sciences around the world. For almost four decades the World Water Congresses have been excellent events for the identification of major global themes concerning the water agenda, and for the bringing together of a large cross-section of stakeholders for the development and implementation of decisions in the field of water.
The Congress will be held with the central theme “Foundations for Global Water Security and Resilience: Knowledge, Technology and Policy”, highlighting the role of water in sustainable and resilient development. Essential for life and fundamental for social development, water is foundational to sustaining the world. Sustainable development requires not only resources but also changes that must occur at various levels, and these changes require resilience.
The key to sustainable and resilient water management lies in innovative technologies as well as social changes implemented by water policies. Consequently, the solutions require contributions from different sectors and disciplines. In this regard, I hope that IWRA’s XVII World Water Congress will act as a platform to share our visions, knowledge, and experiences across all aspects of sustainable water development and management.
